Types of Skin Cancer in Australia: The Common and Aggressive

Skin cancer can appear in many different shapes, sizes, and areas of the body. Because it is the largest organ that’s continuously exposed, it helps your body and peace of mind to have your skin checked to prevent skin cancer.

The Most Common Types of Skin Cancer in Australia

- Squamous cell carcinoma is mainly caused by sun exposure, but can also develop through forms of skin damage such as burns, chemicals, or x-ray exposure. This appears as thickened, red, scaly spots that may bleed or crust. They are commonly found on the lips; at sites of a long-standing scar; and on the skin outside the mouth, anus, and vagina.

While the two mentioned above are the most common, there are two other types of skin cancer that aren’t as common but are considered to be highly aggressive.

Aggressive Types of Skin Cancer

- Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer. Through scattered cells called melanocytes these cells produce the pigment melanin, which gives skin its colour and accounts for about 1% of all skin cancers.

Our Skin Cancer Procedures & Detection

Coolangatta Medical Centre offers a variety of methods when checking for skin cancer. With the team of doctors and state of the art skin cancer clinics, the skin check procedures can be non-invasive and range between a spot check to a full skin check. Below are two of the methods that can be used by a doctor:

  • The ABCDE Procedure

It is common for doctors who have an interest in skin cancers to make use of this reference to identify the characteristics of melanoma as it can occur in the form of dysplastic nevi, also called the atypical mole. The ABCDE are the characteristics used to describe signs of skin damage when diagnosing and classifying melanomas:

  • Asymmetry(A): The analysis is positive when the mole’s two halves fail to match
  • Border(B): Edges appear uneven, scalloped and notched
  • Colour (C): The shade changes from black, tan and brown to a red, blue and also white
  • Diameter (D): The mole growth surpasses 6mm in diameter
  • Evolving(E): If the mole begins to change its shape, colour, and elevation
  • The Ugly Duckling Procedure

The procedure works under the assumption that the moles present on the patient’s skin appear similar. This means that if a mole is slightly different from the rest, it can signify skin cancer.

During your appointment at the skin cancer clinic, the doctors can assist you with a spot check or even a full skin check. Schedule a visit with us for a skin check in Gold Coast.
