September brings father’s day, and with father’s day comes a plethora of organizations bringing men’s health to our attention. While we observe ‘prostate cancer awareness’ month and other male oriented events, we find ourselves asking how we as men can improve our health, and where to start.
At any age the addition of a healthy habit can make a huge impact in the quality of our lives. For example, as a man sometimes it’s easy to forget that our muscles aren’t as strong as they used to be, and we are rudely reminded by a fall or accident. By adding a regular walk or another form of light exercise to your day, you’ll find yourself on the right track to protecting yourself and your independence. Similarly it is wise to recognize our unhealthy habits and make an effort to either eliminate them or change them for the better. For instance, if you treat yourself to a soft drink every time you stop for petrol, instead try buying a juice or flavoured water.
Diet is important too. As men age, we find ourselves more susceptible to things like heart disease and diabetes. By paying attention and eating fresh healthy foods we give our bodies the tools they need to stand up to illness.
