Before insertion — checklist
- Confirm you’re not pregnant (timing or testing)
- Cervical screening if due; STI testing based on risk
- Discuss medicines and history (migraine with aura, VTE, breast cancer, copper allergy)
- Pain‑relief plan; discuss local anaesthetic, cervical block or sedation referral if needed
What to expect on the day
- Consent and questions
- Pelvic exam and insertion
- You can usually drive home; arrange support if you’ve had sedation
- We’ll plan a check and discuss when protection starts
Aftercare & when to seek help
- Mild cramps/spotting are common for a few days
- Use condoms for 7 days unless told otherwise (timing varies with IUD type and cycle timing)
- Seek urgent care for severe pain, fever, very heavy bleeding or if you cannot feel IUD strings and have symptoms
